IELTS Preparation

The main objective of the course is to develop English language skills in four areas namely listening and speaking as well as reading and writing with an emphasis on preparation for taking the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) exam.

Course overview

Starting from February 2018, the IELTS preparation programme is specifically designed for anyone who wishes to improve their English language skills regardless of whether or not the intention is to pursue higher education at Al Rayyan International University College (ARIU). The 14-week long programme is an intensive course with 20 hours of classes per week for morning sessions and 15 hours of classes per week for evening sessions. It would suit anyone who wishes to improve their English language skills in four areas namely listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Listening skills

One part of the course is designed to equip the successful students with a range of listening skills including:
– The ability to understand the main idea and specific factual information,
– The proficiency in recognizing the opinions, attitudes and purpose of a speaker,
– The competence to follow the development of an argument.

Speaking skills

Another part of the course is intended to acquire a wide range of speaking skills including:
– The ability to communicate opinions and information on everyday topics and common experiences in addition to speaking at length on a given topic using appropriate language,
– The skill to organise ideas coherently, to express and justify opinions, as well as to analyse, discuss and speculate about issues.

Reading skills

Another part of the course helps to develop a variety of reading skills including:
– The skills to read for the general sense of a passage, for the main ideas and for detail
– The ability to understand inferences and implied meaning as well as recognise a writer’s opinions, attitudes and purpose,
– The competence to follow the development of an argument.

Writing skills

A section of the course aims to build a variety of writing skills including the ability to write a response appropriately, to organise ideas and use a range of vocabulary and grammar accurately.

Requirements

In order to join the English Foundation Programme, applicants need to have a minimum of 4.5 IELTS score.
